An Interesting Case Of Copyright ~ Opinion

The LA Times reports today about David Burdeny copying Sze Tsung Leong’s photographs. While the photographs aren’t really of the genre here, it’s an interesting case of copyright infringement and how infringement brings down the value of both photographer’s works. Unless a collector is really interested in hypothetically having both pieces for the sake of the case at hand, why would a collector purchase either works? A collector is interested in how many pictures will be reproduced, the lower the edition the higher price a photographer can demand, or the likelier the photographer will even sell his or her work. An edition of 5 will sell more than an edition of 10 and an edition of 10 will sell more than an edition of 25, and so it goes. It also comes down to whether or not your selling posters or ink jets of your work along side of the originals. If there are two photographers selling photo copies of each other, with only different color aspects, that doubles or triples the edition, and what is the original anyway? There’s a lot to think of when you sell your photography and how you sell it and how much of it you sell will ultimately define your success.

This is why copying the work of other artists is frowned upon in the industry circles. This is also why you should be particular as to where your work ends up. Do you want a collector to see your work next to questionable material that will bring the air of class down? We should have discussions about this. As each of us have a stake in how we protect our work online, and in print, and in cases of other photographers copying one another. Borrowing is one thing, downright copying is another. And when I see the photographs of David Burdeny and Sze Tsung Leong side by side… I really feel empathy to Sze Tsung Leong. I hope he wins his battle, not just for himself, but for all of us.

Yves Lecoq is a Mad Bunny

Cruising through Flickr can sometimes bring you to some very interesting pictures. I stumbled across Yves Lecoq’s work some time ago when I wasn’t searching for anyone interesting. Yet, there he was in all his madness. Bunny Madness. The Mad Bunny Series! I was immediately transferred to my childhood . Then Alice came to mind. And then I saw that this was just a glorious display of creativity. And it was fun and I smiled. Art can be fun.

Our language barrier prevents me from doing a proper interview, but he said I could write whatever I wanted to about his work. BRAVE! Instead of going on and on with a bunch of superlatives, I think you should all just enjoy his madness here, BUNNY MADNESS! It IS almost time for Easter. And there are some rather lovely nudes without Bunnies. Love Love Love.

The Fine Art Portrait, with Jock Sturges
March 7-11, 2010

This five-day workshop examines advanced techniques in fine art portraiture. Outstanding portraits are the result of the interaction with the model prior as much as during to the shoot, and Sturges focuses on establishing a relationship between the photographer and his/her subject. Participants will explore techniques of empowering their subject to reveal an inner truth essential to making a fine art portrait with non-professional models, a technique of which he is a universally recognized master.

The workshop consists of morning and afternoon sessions. Each morning begins with a review of the prior day’s work. In the afternoon, under the tutorial of Sturges, participants shoot with models on location at The House on Bayou Road

Built in 1798, this Petite Creole Plantation reigns in simple elegance over historic New Orleans’ “back of town”, across the street from Edgar Degas’s former residence and just a few blocks from the New Orleans Museum of Arts. Two acres of lush landscaping, authentic architecture, and creature comfort make this the perfect setting to experience the romantic grit of old New Orleans against the backdrop of Louisiana in the full flower of spring.

Fiat Lux - Fine Art Nudes by Zoe Wiseman

Zoe Wiseman will be exhibiting 10 years of fine art nudes at A&I Photographic in Hollywood. Opening reception is February 18, 2010, 7PM to 10PM. A&I will be producing a book for the show, as well as a special limited edition book titled Fiat Lux.

50% of all proceeds will benefitÂ The Weingart Center. They help many people here in Los Angeles transform themselves from being homeless to productive members of our community.Â Zoe lived in downtown Los Angeles for a year at 4th and Main Streets directly in the midst of skid row in a refurbished artist loft. The brutal inhumanity of it all affected her. She has decided to give 50% of all proceeds to an organization which focuses on transforming these lives and helping them get off the street.

A book signing, beer and wine bar, catered food and over 30 prints from several of her series. Models on the wall include; Ida Mae, Candace Nirvana, Jazmine Dominique, Natasha Kay, Marketa, Carlotta Champagne, Madame Bink, Muse, Kat Love, Ivory Flame, Stephanie Anne, Larva X, Rebecca Lawrence, Vassanta, Rei, Pash, Niecy Moss, Rebecca Fox, Jessamyne, Zinn Star, Soph and Maria Eriksson.

5 Day Workshop with Allen Birnbach in Joshua Tree

Noted fine art photographer Allen Birnbach, in conjunction with The Julia Dean Workshops of Venice, California is running a five day workshop on photographing the nude in nature from April 26 – April 30, 2010.

The class begins on Monday with an orientation, lecture and portfolio critique at Julia Dean Workshops’ offices. Â After that, we will do a short, clothed session on the beach with the talent who will be our models over the next few days. Â You’ll learn how to work with models in a professional manner that creates an environment of trust and collaboration, and how to establish a rhythm to the shoot that encourages artistic feedback and active participation by your model. Tuesday we will reconnect late afternoon near Joshua Tree on private land that has wonderful boulder fields, live Joshua Trees, and a burn area for our first shoot. Â Each session over the next number of days will focus on one of these unique ecosystems. Wednesday will be a full day of shooting, again with individualized feedback to help you develop your personal vision while you work. Â Thursday we will have a morning shoot and head back to Los Angeles. On Friday, we’ll wrap-up our photographic journey with a group critique, discussion and slide show presentation back at Julia Dean Workshops’ office.

Allen Birnbach’s images have been exhibited in galleries worldwide, and recognized by The Black and White Spider Awards, International Color Awards, The Lucie Awards, and numerous photo magazines.
