The wonderful Ella Rose

Of all the prime elements, for me water is the most sensual.  The attraction of immersing one’s self in water be it sea, river or lake produces a child like reaction of pleasure.  The mysterious appeal of bodies of water have given them a special place in the sacred aspects of societies around the globe.

Ancient tales of beautiful water nymphs have always fascinated me, so when I decided to explore these concepts with a model, it had to be Ella Rose to bring these ideas to life, the very embodiment of a mythical maiden!

This picture was taken of Aubrey by Tobias Steiner at Tift Nature Preserve.

Ivory Flame was the second model I photographed for my project "The Nude in the Irish Landscape. It was a wet miserable November day, with a wind that would cut you in two. This image was shot in an old graveyard in Kildare. She was freezing and her nose was almost blue and we still had a days work ahead of us. But like the professional that she is, she stuck with it and performed to the highest standards. She told me she would never come back to Ireland to work outdoors again. Almost two years later she did. I had to promise her blue skies, sunshine and warm air. I did, but of course I could not deliver. This is Ireland after all. A green and wet land with four seasons in one day! Will she ever come back again, I don't know. Maybe someone should ask her.

Ella Rose

I had the pleasure of working with the fabulous Ella Rose a couple of times over this summer.  On the second occasion as we were heading back at the end of the shoot, the sky darkened with the promise of an impending storm so we stopped to do a quick set in a field of barley.  A whole field of the same crop has much more impact as a texture; the barley took on a liquid feel moving to and fro in the breeze.  I shouldn’t wonder if there was a bumper harvest though after this visit from England’s very own Demeter!
